It's Just About That Time

It's hard to believe it's almost the middle of August already! As you've probably noticed, the summer programs have just about ended at the library. If you started late or went away for a week or two and need to catch up, there's still time to turn in your reading logs and game sheets.

If you missed a chance to read to one of our "Paws for Reading" dog friends you're in luck. There are still opportunities to read to them. The dogs and their handlers have been very generous and will continue to come in through the end of the month. Days and times vary, so stop in at the library and check out the schedule and sign up to read to our canine friends.

To celebrate the end of a really fun summer we will be having a Dance Party on Fri. Aug. 21st at 1:00pm. Victor's favorite DJ, Ken Klei will host the program for us. At this party we will be announcing the winners of our end of summer prizes and awarding prizes to all who completed the program. We are asking that you let us know if you'll be joining us that day so we can have a certificate ready for you. To register, stop in at the library or give us a call.

If you can't make the party you are still eligble for the prizes and can get a certificate. Just let Mrs. Madden know that you can't come and she'll have a certificate ready for you on your next visit to the library.

Congratulations on all the great reading you did this summer! Looking forward to seeing you on the 21st. Get out your dancing shoes and get ready to kick up your heels!

Tomorrow's movie is Fantasia 2000. It's a fun-filled movie, combining breathtaking images with classical music. From Beethoven to Gershwin - from flamingos bobbing yo-yos to a city in bluesy motion - vivid animation brings the music of the masters to colorful life.

Duct Tape Workshop

You've always known that duct tape is great for fixing things around the house, but did you know that you can make things with it too? Come express your inner artist at a Duct Tape Workshop on Wed. July 22nd at 1:00.

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of man's first steps on the moon, this week's TGI* Friday movie is Fly Me to the Moon.

It's a retelling of the 1969 Apollo 11 landing on the moon from the perspective of three young flies that allegedly hitched a ride on the historic flight. Nat, IQ, and Scooter live by the credo "If it's not an adventure, it's not worth doing," so when the three flies get a chance to sneak aboard the space shuttle for a ride to the moon, all systems are definitely go.

The movie begins at 10:00am on Friday, July 17th. Bring along a snack and a drink and re-live the excitement of the first moon landing 40 years ago this week.

This week's TGI* Friday movie is "The Muppets Take Manhattan".

Broadway-bound, the Muppets take Manhattan by storm in this magical musical about breaking into show business. Fresh out of drama school, Kermit, Fozzie Bear and the entire cast of Kermit's musical--Manhattan Melodies--head for the Big Apple with plans to turn their small play into a big hit. All they need now is someone to produce their show. But when no one in town will even meet with them, it's up to Kermit to believe hard enough for all of his friends that the show WILL go on!

The movie begins at 10:00am and runs for 94 minutes. Bring along a snack and a drink and enjoy a musical morning with the Muppets.

Calling All Teens

* Are you going into 7th grade or above this summer?
*Do you like working with kids?
*Do you have 2 hours a week free to volunteer at the library?

Then think about adding us to your list of summer activities!

We are looking for some reliable & dedicated teens to help out at the library this summer. Volunteer opportunities include shelving books, helping out at craft programs and helping with various aspects of the summer reading program.

An orientation meeting for summer volunteers that will explain how the program works will be held on Thurs. June 18th at 4:00pm.

Space is limited for this program and registration is required. To register stop in at the library and fill out an application. Applications are due by June 17th.

Summer Reading Kick-Off

Join us on Monday, June 29th at 1:00 pm for Happy Music for Happy Kids, the library's Summer Reading Kick-Off program. Musician Mike Kornrich will be presenting the fun and lively program of well known songs for kids of all ages. He promises to get the audience up singing and dancing while he entertains them on the guitar, banjo, ukulele and harmonica. This program is recommended for kids ages 3 & up. No registration is required.

Activity Days

There are LOTS of fun things happening at the library this summer. Registration for all the programs begins on June 22nd.

Paws for Reading is back for another summer. This program teams children and certified therapy dogs for some shared reading time. This program is designed for newly independent and reluctant readers who need to keep up their reading skills over the summer. Sessions will be scheduled on a weekly basis at a variety of days and times. Details will be available on June 22nd.

Baby Break is for babies ages 0-18 months and their parents or caregivers. It will be held on Monday mornings at 10:30. These are special programs designed for our littlest patrons. Activities include rhyme times, music programs and "come and play" times.

Toddler Time is a weekly program of stories, finger plays, flannel board rhymes and songs for children ages 18-36 months. It will be held on Wednesday mornings at 10:30.

Family Stories and Crafts for kids ages 3 to 6 will be held on Thursday mornings at 11:00. Join Mrs. Durham for a morning of stories, songs, crafts and fun.

Exploration Mondays is a series of programs for kids going into grades 1, 2 & 3. It will be held on Monday afternoons from 1:00 to 2:00. Each week we will be exploring a different creative activity such as music, art and dance.

The Artsy Smartsy Club is a program for kids going into grades 4, 5 & 6. It will be held on three Wednesday afternoons this summer, July 1st, 15th and 29th from 1:00 to 2:00. We'll be learning about three famous artists and doing art projects using their methods. At the end of the summer we'll have an art exhibition featuring our works.

Express Yourself is for kids going into 7th grades and up. It will be held on three Wednesdays this summer, July 8th, 22nd and Aug. 5th from 1:00 to 2:00. Express your inner artist at a duct tape program, your inner designer at a "Gock" (Goth Sock Puppet) making program and your inner gamer at a gaming afternoon.

TGI* Friday Movies (*Thank Goodness It's) is for all ages. Join us on Friday mornings at at 10:00 for an end of the week, chill-out morning of creative movie fun. Bring along a snack and a drink and enjoy a little quiet time at the end of your busy week. The list of movies that will be shown will be available on June 22nd.

Summer Reading Clubs

We will be having four reading clubs this summer, something for everyone!

Baby Beat is a reading club for our youngest patrons, ages 0-36 months. This is a program that shows you how to make early literacy a part of your and your baby's everyday life. Play the Baby Beat Reading Game with your little one. Come to the library once a week, pick up information about that week's "Smart Start Skill" and get suggestions for activities to do with your child. Fill out your game board and earn prizes along the way.

Rookie Readers is the reading club for preschoolers through second graders. Keep track of the minutes you read or are read to on weekly coloring sheets. Come to the library once a week, turn in your coloring sheet and pick up a new one. Put a sticker on your palette hanging on the children's room wall, pick a prize from the prize box and register for the weekly drawing.

Senior Readers is for kids going into grades 3 to 6. Play "READO" our summer reading game. Come to the library once a week, turn in your game sheet and pick up a new one. Put a sticker on your guitar hanging on the children's room wall, pick a prize from the prize box and register for the weekly drawing.

Teen Read is for kids going into grades 7 & up. Take the "Teen Read Challenge". Earn chances for the "Teen Read" Grand Prizes by reading, attending programs and expressing yourself creatively at the library this summer. The more involved you get, the more chances you have to win!

Be Creative @ Your Library is the theme of this year's summer's reading program. We have a summer full of activities planned for all members of the family. Activities include reading clubs, activity days, story times, Friday afternoon movies and our popular "Paws for Reading" program.
